i love my smartphone

i've had the cingular 3125 smartphone for a month now, and loving it.  my first smartphone turned me into an anti-social snob because of missed calls, flaky connection, and having to reboot it a couple of times a day.  i didn't want to make phone calls nor pick them up.  my family and friends weren't very happy about this.  i resorted to the free nokia brick to regain some credibility, but i missed t9 and my calendar.  the 3125 is a direct rip-off of the motorola razr: streamlined, metal keypad with a thin clam shell design.  it slips nicely in most of my pants of coat pockets and doesn't draw very much attention.

today, i had to head to belltown to vote, and didn't remember the street address to the voting booth, but knew the name of the building (the bell tower is as depressing as it looks on the outside).  i used the mobile version of windows live search to find the address.  i forgot to print out the stranger's election cheat sheet, and didn't want to completely rely on my short-term memory.  i was able to search for article on the stranger, scroll through it, and fill out my ballot with confidence :)  the browsing experience on the phone was pretty nice because of the large screen and the buttons to navigate up and down has the perfect response touch.

the experience could've been better if the stranger had a mobile version and if their cheat sheet wasn't pdf.  i also used google to search for the article, and it returned back in text instead of html, which tripped me up a bit.  but i'm pretty happy with the whole experience despite site compatibility.

our amazing landlords

jas and i realized how lucky we are to be living in our current house (despite it being month-to-month) when we saw the magical house that our landlords, ron and david are currently working on.  they were hosting a hat show for one a friend, and we were able to take a peak around the rest of the house.  they bought a church in ballard and in the painful process of remodelling it.  everywhere you step, there's something interesting to look and awww at.  i love that they have the freedom to dream and put it to execution.  i can't wait for it to all come together.  it's like watching a small scale sagrada familia being built.

david is a bead artist, and you can check out his work on his site.  i snagged some of his photos of his work.  yup, those are beads.

this may look like a breakfast set, but it's actually wearable jewelry.  bacon earrings, eggie glasses, and a toast purse.

the toast purse on its own.

a little accordian box.

Spain!

i *finally* posted my pics of our late summer trip to spain and london:

madrid

granada

barcelona

london

the architecture and art were truly inspiring - plenty of picasso and gaudi!  and the people watching kept us very entertained.  tapas are overrated.

why are posting pictures so hard?  i had to incent myself in order to get this done - treat myself to a new smartphone!  yes! yes! yes!  i'm tired of my "reliable" nokia brick phone.

amazon and kim-chi

i just found out that amazon sells groceries, and the first thing i looked up was kim-chi. i was very happy to find something that matched after many combinations: kim-chee, kimchee, kimchi, kim-chi!  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000E18CUU/qid=1148882317/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-9599866-9520161?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&s=grocery&v=glance&n=16310101

it's not canned kim-chi, but the next best thing - kim-chi flavored instant noodles.  what's even more exciting is that it's healthy and a flavor that the local trader joe's doesn't carry.

some things i'd like to see:
- carry more ethnic variety: where's the ramen?  every college kid is going to look for this.  most of what they have is something i can find at the nearest convenience store.
- display the nutrition info: it does display the ingredients (and even preparation steps) and brand description (for example, annie chun is korean) but no nutrition facts?
- create a fun browsing experience: the site is structured too much like a grocery store (canned, cereal, snacks aisles) but without the eye-candy.  i also expect pivots based on preparation, health, cuisine, etc that is harder for a grocerty store to do.  for example, do i go to the condiments aisle or the asian aisle for soy sauce?

i'm happy to see online grocery emerging again, and amazon has the potential to do it right.  can't wait to put together a care package for my brother.  the idea of junk food, dvds, and gadgets in one package is brilliant.
