    i love my smartphone

i've had the cingular 3125 smartphone for a month now, and loving it.  my first smartphone turned me into an anti-social snob because of missed calls, flaky connection, and having to reboot it a couple of times a day.  i didn't want to make phone calls nor pick them up.  my family and friends weren't very happy about this.  i resorted to the free nokia brick to regain some credibility, but i missed t9 and my calendar.  the 3125 is a direct rip-off of the motorola razr: streamlined, metal keypad with a thin clam shell design.  it slips nicely in most of my pants of coat pockets and doesn't draw very much attention.

today, i had to head to belltown to vote, and didn't remember the street address to the voting booth, but knew the name of the building (the bell tower is as depressing as it looks on the outside).  i used the mobile version of windows live search to find the address.  i forgot to print out the stranger's election cheat sheet, and didn't want to completely rely on my short-term memory.  i was able to search for article on the stranger, scroll through it, and fill out my ballot with confidence :)  the browsing experience on the phone was pretty nice because of the large screen and the buttons to navigate up and down has the perfect response touch.

the experience could've been better if the stranger had a mobile version and if their cheat sheet wasn't pdf.  i also used google to search for the article, and it returned back in text instead of html, which tripped me up a bit.  but i'm pretty happy with the whole experience despite site compatibility.

    our amazing landlords

jas and i realized how lucky we are to be living in our current house (despite it being month-to-month) when we saw the magical house that our landlords, ron and david are currently working on.  they were hosting a hat show for one a friend, and we were able to take a peak around the rest of the house.  they bought a church in ballard and in the painful process of remodelling it.  everywhere you step, there's something interesting to look and awww at.  i love that they have the freedom to dream and put it to execution.  i can't wait for it to all come together.  it's like watching a small scale sagrada familia being built.

david is a bead artist, and you can check out his work on his site.  i snagged some of his photos of his work.  yup, those are beads.

this may look like a breakfast set, but it's actually wearable jewelry.  bacon earrings, eggie glasses, and a toast purse.

the toast purse on its own.

    Spain!

i *finally* posted my pics of our late summer trip to spain and london:

    madrid

    granada

    barcelona

    london

the architecture and art were truly inspiring - plenty of picasso and gaudi!  and the people watching kept us very entertained.  tapas are overrated.

why are posting pictures so hard?  i had to incent myself in order to get this done - treat myself to a new smartphone!  yes! yes! yes!  i'm tired of my "reliable" nokia brick phone.

    amazon and kim-chi

i just found out that amazon sells groceries, and the first thing i looked up was kim-chi. i was very happy to find something that matched after many combinations: kim-chee, kimchee, kimchi, kim-chi!  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000E18CUU/qid=1148882317/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-9599866-9520161?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&s=grocery&v=glance&n=16310101

it's not canned kim-chi, but the next best thing - kim-chi flavored instant noodles.  what's even more exciting is that it's healthy and a flavor that the local trader joe's doesn't carry.

some things i'd like to see:
    - carry more ethnic variety: where's the ramen?  every college kid is going to look for this.  most of what they have is something i can find at the nearest convenience store.
    - display the nutrition info: it does display the ingredients (and even preparation steps) and brand description (for example, annie chun is korean) but no nutrition facts?
    - create a fun browsing experience: the site is structured too much like a grocery store (canned, cereal, snacks aisles) but without the eye-candy.  i also expect pivots based on preparation, health, cuisine, etc that is harder for a grocerty store to do.  for example, do i go to the condiments aisle or the asian aisle for soy sauce?

i'm happy to see online grocery emerging again, and amazon has the potential to do it right.  can't wait to put together a care package for my brother.  the idea of junk food, dvds, and gadgets in one package is brilliant.

    why i love seattle

to enjoy the sweet spring sunsets, i had coffee at bauhaus outside.  i was in such high spirits when i left.  after a leisurely walk back to the car and driving away, it struck me that i left my purse on the seat outside!  smartphone, passport, camera, wallet, and all.  but i didn't panic - because really - what seattle hipster could have the heart to steal a purse?  a pack of cigarettes is a different question.

returning back to bauhaus, i didn't see my purse on the chair.  i got a bit nervous, and after explaining the situation to the guys working at bauhaus, they returned back an apologetic look.  i was in shock.  one cracked a smile and handed me my purse that was in prestine shape.  only in seattle.

    working from coffeeshops

i'm working from bauhaus this morning to put some fun into answering email.  in college, i spent more time at unicorn than my computer lab.  there's something nice about being surrounded by noise and feeling unnoticed.

bauhaus is playing notorious big right now!

mistral - not to be taken lightly

Mistral fois-gras last night was a serious eating event, and i haven't fully recovered!  12 amazing courses with 7 wine pairings and being amongst stylish foodies at mistral really did a number on me.  it's 4pm right now, and i can't bring myself to eat anything.  nothing i eat will compare.  my favorite, and a crowd favorite is the fois-gras with the ingenious apple chip on top.  oh heaven!

    matisse in seattle

on my way to find salumi in pioneer square, i ran into a gallery featuring henri matisse!  i'm a big matisse fan and inspired by his colorful collages.  it was a beautiful surprise... makes me wish that i worked downtown to roam around the city during lunch breaks.

    black and blue tomorrow

i somehow got bullied to go snowboarding tomorrow.  i'm honestly scared.  i've been skiing for 3 years now, and comfortable enough to go down most slopes with the occasional kicking and screaming.  my friends
think i'm lame, and even a dude at the ski store told me i look like a snowboarder!

i've always been fascinated with snowboarding.  it's a better looking sport, and after dealing with leah, sean, joe, and oliver yelling with joy through the powder @ whistler, i realized that i'm missing out on something.  i tried it @ park city a year ago and seriously got beaten up.  i was a bit too eager to get into the sport that i went down a run without knowing how to slow down or brake.  by the time i started my lesson, i was utterly destroyed with tears rolling down my cheeks.  i made it home to seattle with a bruise between my eyes, a cracked rib, and unresponsive limbs.

it's a new year, and we should all try something challenging once a year, right?  i've got myself a helmet and my best friend... so i should be safe (i'm nervous!).

    spoon in a sink

i'm not a cat person, and never will be.  but there's one cat out there that overcomes my allergies and hate for hairballs, and that's spoon.

jas likes to tell me really random cat facts, like sleeping for 16 hours a day and making funny creaking throat sounds when they see birds.  she also revealed that they love sinks!  i caught spoon in my sink the other day:

there's even a site dedicated to cats in a sink: http://www.catsinsinks.com/.

    mes amis

i'm officially in my late 20s!  no tears for me, b/c i have the most thoughtful friends to remind me how lucky i am.  i was surprised with a day trip to my favorite winter wonderland, crystal mountain.  it was a purely blissful snow day, and i have many bruises to prove it.  at lunch we were all smiles, and by happy hour, the beer ran down our throats like honey.  just when i thought the day was over, they surprised me again with a dinner at a charming restaurant in enumclaw.

many, many thanks to my favorites friends.  i love being 27!

    podcasting!

podcast is getting cooler!  i'm not a big fan of listening to developers talking, but some fun stuff is happening w/ music...

like jasmine being in a podcast!  http://www.paintthesky.org/whyme.html.  she's got great music taste (and movies).  she not only discovered new music from listening to podcasts, but is also sharing it through being on one.

for the kexp fans out there, they support podcasting, too: http://www.kexp.org/podcasting.asp

i'm also in 30 seconds of one, but it's the 'work' side of me: http://www.podtech.net/?p=67.  nerd alert -- beware!

    i miss perlow

when i read maya's post about perlow leaving, i started tearing up.  and then i cried.  one of my favorite friends has left to san francisco!

perlow is a tough cookie.  when i first met him at work, he was so intimidating that i stuttered whenever i was forced to talk with him.  it was after the long island challenge at the back door that broke down the barrier - and i realized how funny and enjoyable he was.  we did everything together - road trip to portland, hanging out in san francisco, eating and lounging in france to just day-to-day stuff like fuming about work, playing tennis, and shopping therapy.

perlow, we miss you!  don't forget us in seattle!

    89 degrees, feels like 96

despite the hot hot heat (a new favorite band!) in viriginia, i got so much done on my short vacation. the humidity sucks all the energy out of me, but when i'm finally awake (wakeup time is noon) i start off with some coffee and a book.

i've gotten more accomplished than an entire season, and it's been so fun.
book: atonement, ian mcewan - a beautiful read. "Finally he spoke the three simple words that no amount of bad art or bad fairth can ever quite cheapen.  She repeated them, with exactly the same slight emphasis on the seound word, as though she had been the one to say them first. He had no religious belief, but it was impossible not to think of an invisible presence or witness in the room, and that these words spoken alound were like signatures on an unseen contract."

book: the curious incident of the dog in the night-time, mark haddon - short, fun read. i got annoyed towards the end b/c the main character (an autistic boy) was annoying and the end wasn't satisfying.

movie: quiz show - ray fiennes was so charming!  what happened to him now?

movie: ordinary people - really wonderful, reall depressing story about a teenage boy having lost a brother, and a mother who can't love her remaining son. i couldn't deal with all of the emotions, so i ran off to the theatre to watch...

movie: charlie and chocolate factory - creepy and magical. i think i prefer the first movie adaption more b/c it was more mysterious.

current book: anna karenina, leo tolstoy - yeah! i finally made a dent to the 800 pages. i'm not big on russian lit, but after figuring out everyone's name and relationship, anna's love affair is captivating.
i haven't organized my music or written letters as i had planned (and only went to 1 h&m store!) , but i feel so refreshed and ready for work.

    Geek help

i saw a commerical of Geek Squad where geeks fall from the sky and help a pathetic woman on the computer. i cringed when i watched it.

i'm at a conference today (on a saturday - ouch!) where the room is full of geeks. one guy was getting a blue screen while installing windows xp, and overheard that we're part of MS. we huddled around his computer, trying to figure out the problem. i called my internal help desk, but after 10 mintes, he determined that it was a hardware problem and left it at that. sheesh. i even tried help websites - but there's too much to hunt through, and you have to read the entire post to see if there's actually a solution. no luck there. the guy had a presentation in 3 hours.

this would've been the perfect opportunity to call the geek squad. now that i think about that, there's definitely a movement around getting immediate, specialized help. this about queer eye providing an instant style help before proposing to a significant other.

    IKEA toys

My favorite cat told me that she madly in love the IKEA mouse i got her.  She's been playing with it endlessly (ahem, aly).  I love how IKEA always manages to surprise me.

    cupcake trend

i've noticed this trend w/ gormet cupcakes lately.  in seattle, i know of at least two locations of the cupcake specialty store Verite - ballard and madrona.  both nestled in quiet neighborhoods and attract the locals. they aren't cheap. $2 for their large (which i can eat in 4 bites) and $1 for a bite-size.

trendCentral also had an article on cupcakes in beverly hills: http://www.sprinklescupcakes.com/.  peanut butter chocolate - yum!  but at $3.25? they even do dog cupcakes. sheesh. there's clearly a market for these high-end, specialized delicaties. first the donut, now the cupcake!
